ONLINE WRITING WORKSHOPS, LLC, LAUNCHES WEB-BASED IMPROVEMENT VENUE FOR AUTHORS AROUND THE WORLD
Today at WorldCon, the annual World Science Fiction Convention for readers, writers, and publishers, Online Writing Workshops, LLC, announced the launch of its first online writing workshop--for the tens of thousands of aspiring writers of science fiction and fantasy.
With half a million manuscripts written each year, and only a 1-in-400 chance of getting a first book published, aspiring writers need all the help they can get, and a seven-day-a-week, 24-hour-a-day online venue for peer review is a great resource. An earlier version of the company's online writing workshop, sponsored by a genre publisher, proved the concept's popularity by acquiring over 8600 members in 18 months despite very little promotion either in print or online.
Online Writing Workshops plans to launch public workshops in other genres during the fourth quarter of this year (Q4 '00), which may include horror, romance, mystery, and young-adult fiction. The company will also be offering turnkey online workshops or technology licenses to writers' conferences, writers' associations, and academic societies--any organization whose members could benefit from the opportunity to improve their writing through peer review, no matter how distant their geographical locations.
Writers who join the workshop at sff.onlinewritingworkshop.com can post their chapters or short stories in order to receive reviews and feedback from other writers; review the work of others; or read and learn from each month's Editors' Choice reviews, which showcase the submission in each category that shows the most potential according to the workshop's Editorial Board (made up of professionals from all parts of the publishing industry--editors, writers, and others).
The Online Writing Workshops Web-site interface provides many advanced and unique features for writers and reviewers while remaining clear and easy to use. Features include instantaneous posting of submissions via the Web, aggregated reviews and ratings for each submission, review history for each reviewer, and an informative member directory.
While there are other, private or hobby workshops that operate via e-mail or the Web, Online Writing Workshops's professional, robust offerings are the first to maximize the potential of the Internet and the World Wide Web in providing aspiring writers with a venue in which to improve their writing and, perhaps, get published.
Price is another area in which Online Writing Workshops is extremely favorable to writers. Permanent members of the Online Writing Workshop for Science Fiction and Fantasy pay only $40/year, and the company offers a one-month free trial membership to all. This low annual price sets the company's offering apart from other online opportunities to improve one's writing: Internet-based courses and workshop classes that can cost up to ten times as much for a weeks-long program.
Online Writing Workshops, LLC, is based in Connecticut. The founding members share between them years of editorial experience, a career in Web development beginning in 1994, and expertise in management and back-end programming for interactive Web sites.
